Saudi Says Deal Reached On BlackBerry Services


Saudi Arabia reached an agreement and the makers of BlackBerry smartphone users access to information, telephone number, courier service to avoid the prohibition, the Saudi official said on Saturday.

The contract includes the installation of a BlackBerry server, Saudi Arabia, which allows the government to monitor posts and remove the fears of the official service may be used for criminal purposes, officials said.

A transaction can have a major impact on other countries, including India and the United Arab Emirates, have expressed similar concerns about how the BlackBerry-maker Research In Motion Ltd., handles the data.

Legal Saudi official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss details of the deal with the media, said tests have now way to determine how to install a BlackBerry server in the country.

The notified agreement raised questions about how it could affect access to Saudi sent over the BlackBerry, but Saudi officials do not specify the details. RIM representatives will not immediately confirm receipt of messages.
