Amazon tablet will be launched in August
It seems Amazon will use its long-awaited tablet on the market to challenge Apple by the end of the year.
Taiwan-based component makers say that the online retailer will launch a tablet PC in August, with an aggregate worldwide turnover in 2011 to 4,000,000 units, according to a report from the tech site DigiTimes. With monthly orders is expected to hit 700,000 to 800,000 units a month of the tablet launch is timed to take advantage of pre-Thanksgiving shopping rush, DigiTimes' sources pointed out.
Taiwan-based Quanta Computer has reportedly already received orders from retail giant Amazon to build the first tablet PC. The new tablet will probably use E Ink's Fringe Field Switching LCD technology, which suggests that it is a color LCD touch panel (a deviation from the black-white E-Ink Kindle we've seen so far). "
Sources said that Amazon is under pressure to a tablet to compete with iPhone, Kindle because sales have not been outside North America and Europe. A new tablet will also benefit from Amazon's newly opened AppStore, and the new Amazon Cloud Drive.
When asked last month by Consumer Reports about the possibility of selling its own tablet Amazon, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos cagely replied: "Stay tuned." Bezos also said that during the interview that if Amazon were to make a tablet, it would not replace the Kindle, but will be sold next.
