Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX9V: Review
SONY CYBER-SHOT DSC HX9V compact
Price: $ 600
responsible companion
The low-down: This 16-megapixel camera has a zoom range of 24-384mm (film equivalent). It has a wide range of programmable settings, so it is a pity that it does not come with a printed manual. Most owners will never take full advantage of its features.
The 75mm LCD screen is high resolution and good brightness. The image stabilization is very effective - we took pictures handheld with one sixth of a second. Movies can be recorded in 1080i HD mode. There are built-in GPS and a compass to record location information in the EXIF. Construction quality is good and all important features are easily accessible - if you are working on the custom button is the standard exposure compensation button. And do you think there Smile Detection, which can be set for Big, Normal or Easy, but there is no possibility Grump?
Like: The lens is remarkably good for such a wide coverage and photos on ISO200 is clean, which is surprising for a 16mp sensor. Focus and exposure are correct. And 24-mm wide angle is excellent for architectural photography. Video quality is excellent.
Dislikes: By default, the colors are oversaturated, but can be reduced through a menu to be. The lack of printed instructions, in addition to how to place the battery and turn the camera, is inexcusable.
Verdict: We HX9V to Ballarat for a tourist try-outs, and we loved the wide angle end of the zoom. This is really a camera to consider for the trip to Europe. (See example photos on Ballarat terrylane.info/photos/SonyHX9V.) The natural competition for this camera is the Panasonic Lumix TZ20 ($ 600) to adjust for the functions, but has the added advantage of brilliant touch screen control.
