Mangalore: Students develop hybrid bicycle

Mangalore, June 18 : Those on the bike after a long period, are sure to find stairs difficult. But this would not happen if you use the bike from U. Adithi and her three classmates. You can switch the motor to accelerate and complete your trip before you get the power and re pedal. You can even charge your mobile when you use this custom bike.

U. Adithi, Ajaya R. Pai, Dharmesh Patel and Nakul A. Raichura, all mechanical engineering students at Srinivas Institute of Technology, has a "double-powered" bike ride to get more fun. "We enjoyed riding bikes to school and college days. We want to continue and spread joy," said Ms. Adithi.

The students have fixed the engine behind the bicycle. This engine is powered by two 12 volt batteries. A solar collector is mounted on the two batteries, an extra 12-volt battery charger. This extra battery used to power motor when the batteries run out for the two runs. The extra battery works up to the moment the second battery to get recharged by solar panel, said Mr. Patel.

To give a demonstration, Mr. Patel was sitting on the bike by turning the switch under the seat. He kicked a while before you press the accelerator to use the engine to do.

Mr. Patel said that the bike could go at a speed of 12 kph. "You can reduce the throttle and kick start too," he said.

The students have gone to the energy generated during cycling armor. They have two dynamometer fixed on the back to convert the rotational energy into electrical energy.

This energy is stored in a 6 volt battery. The strength of this 6-volt battery used for the headlamp. "During the time one day, this battery is used for mobile phone bill," said Mr. Raichura.

Professor Dilip Kumar and Jayaram K. Thumb, head of the Mechanical Engineering Department, said they had helped students adapt to the engine and the preparation of the CAD model of the bike.

"The students run to the patenting of this concept," said Mr. Thumb.
